Talkin’ Oral Roberts (Part One)

(Second Try at this post. Already posted it once and it decided to delete everything!)

Last Time Out

The Coyotes are coming off of a giant road win against Fort Wayne 68-58 where the Coyotes had a disastrous start, but rallied back to win by double digits. After the 10 minute mark in the second half (which coincidentally is where the horrendous video feed cut out), the Coyotes never trailed and cruised to a W.

Your, now, second place Coyotes used a solid dose of Peterson, Hagedorn, Burch- Manning, and Mooney to all score in the double digits, while holding Fort Wayne to over 20 points below their season average. The tenacious Coyote defense is firing on all cylinders despite missing their most athletic player in Hurst. One major concern is the inability of Matt Mooney to get going in non-big time games. His first field goal did not come until the second half, and he has developed a Jekyll & Hyde-esq issue of inconsistency.

The Opponent

The Golden Eagles started off conference hot with three straight wins (with one of the easier openings) and are finishing their final game in an absolutely brutal three game road trip to the Dakota’s dropping their first contest to SDSU 78-75… falling to the Bison of NDSU 82-64 Saturday… and coming to the defending Summit League Champion Coyotes.

Oral Roberts is led by first year coach Paul Mills, following the departure of long time coach Scott Sutton.

(If you are unfamiliar with ORU Basketball history, Scott Sutton led the Golden Eagles to Three NCAA Tournaments, Two NIT Appearances, and Three Irrelevant Post Season Tournaments. Quite the 18 year stretch for the BYU of the Summit League, however Sutton was fired after an abysmal 9th place in the Summit League. Not all of this can be contributed to Sutton as in 2013, when a new President was hired, Sutton was forced to place recruits through Faith-Based Tests to ensure they were Christians and recruit players without tattoos.

Imagine being in Tulsa, Oklahoma, another D1 program is already there… Including Wichita State is right up the road in Kansas, along with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Tough to see why it would be difficult when your pond of fish gets even smaller. Read more about it in Tulsa World… Okay… Rant Over.)

Also, imagine being Spencer Sutton, the Sophomore is the son of former assistant Sean Sutton and nephew of former coach Scott Sutton. Imagine being at the school where your dad and uncle got sacked……

The Golden Eagles started FIVE underclassmen against NDSU and should be a major concern moving forward in the conference.

They are led by:
Sophomore Emmanuel Nzekwesi, the 6’8″ forward originally from the Netherlands, he has blossomed into the leading scorer, averaging 13.5 PPG and pulling down 7.3 REB/G, he has only been better entering into conference play scoring over 17 points/ game. This man is a force below the block and could lead to real concern if the Coyotes enter into foul trouble.

Sophomore Javan White, the 6’10” forward who is actually an Ames, Iowa graduate could be a major headache for the ‘Yotes as well. White is averaging 10.8 PPG, but pulls down a whopping 9.2 REB/G. On a side note, White did go down against NDSU with a leg injury… but appeared to walk it off and expect him to play tonight.

They are also led in the perimeter by Sophomore Sam Kearns, the 6’0″ Texas-native, who is averaging 10.3 PPG and shooting 35.7 from Downtown.

Obviously the star of the team should be an inherent X-Factor, but Matt Mooney is by far the X-Factor for the Coyotes. Following an abysmal performance on the road, it is up to him to lead the charge against Oral Roberts. For the Coyotes to win, I expect Mooney needs to score north of his 17 PPG average.

The big men for Oral Roberts are going to perform to their usual standard and while it is critical for the Coyotes to stay out of foul trouble, if Sam Kearns gets it going, it could spell for a long night. Limiting ORU’s outside shooting will be key towards focusing on the big men and ensuring a big victory.

Look Alike’s

Hunger Games will forever be one of my favorite series of all time. I firmly believe it was the inspiration for THE video game taking over the world, Fortnite. However, I hated Cato in that movie. He was the epitome of a dick and my goodness is Austin Ruder a spitting image.
(Side note, look at their roster photos when you get a chance ORU Roster. Honestly, I’m so embarrassed they are a part of this prestigous conference…. screw it prediction time now…… YOTES BY 80.)

The Coyotes are favored by 10 with an O/U of 148.

The Golden Eagles don’t stand a chance, my original prediction was an 8 point Coyote win, but that photo has me triggered like a millennial snowflake.

Final Score: ‘Yotes 146-66

(Side Note: I read through this whole thing and saw there was not a single swear word… you gotta be shitting me! Good for me!)
