Coyotes Clobber Fort Wayne

The Coyotes overcame a slow start in their first road Summit League showdown to down the Fort Wayne Mastodons 68-58. The ‘Dons roared out of the gate, jumping to a 13-4 lead as the ‘Yotes mustered a lackluster, discombobulated offensive performance. The tide was turned around the 10 minute mark when Tyler Peterson, filling in for Carlton Hurst , went on a tear, scoring 9 consecutive points on a 12-2 run to give the Coyotes their first lead of the game. Aided by a Fort Wayne technical just before half, the Coyotes went to the locker room up six in a 33-27 contest.

I can only give half of a second half recap due to the wonderful Fort Wayne broadcast, taking my precious six dollars that could have been spent on a tasty Captain Coke at Two’fers, and not allowing me to watch the last ten minutes. From what I saw, the Coyotes played solid defense, and never let the Mastadons get close. It is unbelievable that Matt Mooney finally got his first bucket to fall with 11:42 to go in the game. The ‘Yotes held a lead as large as 18 in the second half and cruised to victory.

With the win, the Coyotes move into a tie for second place with Oral Roberts (who fell on the road to the blue team up north). The Coyotes are off this Saturday and match up with the ORU Golden Eagles next Wednesday in Vermillion. (The game is on Midco SN… Thank. God.)

X-Factors

Tyler Hagedorn – 12 Pts, 3/10 FG, 1/3 3PT, 5/6 FT, 11 Reb

This is exactly the kind of performance I talked about in the preview (damn I love it when I’m right) Hagedorn played his best game in conference, finally getting the mask off. If he continues this production up, watch out. He adds another layer of depth underneath and is versatile enough to hit shots from behind the arc.

Kason Harrell – 10 Pts, 4/13 FG, 0/7 3PT, 2/2 FT

I freaking love it. This Coyote team doesn’t have the best shooters on offense, they don’t have the best athleticism, but Craig Smith’s team balled out on defense. We shut this man down and got in Bryson Scott’s head early. Holding a team 22 points below their PPG average is just tenacious and doing the little things right. That’s why I love Craig Smith being as energetic as he is, the enthusiam is contageous.

Spread

Good team win, great teams cover.

With a 1.5 point spread in favor of the Coyotes, they blew it out of the water.

Over/Under was set at 152, so if you had the ‘Yotes and the under? Go treat yourself to something nice (or pay your bookie back from the crushing debt you already owe.)

Prediction

I said it would be an 83-81 Coyote win. Even though I thought there would be more scoring, the bottom line is the ‘Yotes got a major road win, setting up and even bigger test next Wednesday.
